n 1959, an assembly of bright and bold medical students
from Class 62 and Class 63 (the UERM College of Medicine's first and second batches of medical students) lay down
the foundation which formed the Alpha Sigma Phi Fraternity. Because of the
restrictive atmosphere that existed in the UERM community at the time, the dean of the medical
college would not allow the members to organize. To gain school
recognition, the members of Alpha Sigma Phi had to show that
they could maintain good academic standings despite their
new found brotherhood. The members not only proved that they could excel in
their academic endeavor, they also led the UERM
community with the numerous activities that the Alpha Sigma Phi sponsored.
n
establishing the fraternity, the original members were in effect espousing
an idea - an idea that shunned mediocrity, and powered by the belief that
each man has the innate capacity to achieve and excel in his chosen field of
endeavor by constantly seeking guidance and by continuous and unfailing
effort.
he common denominator that
bounded this crop of Alphans was the total commitment they demonstrated in the pursuit of
their noble goals. With this kind of attitude, it is not hard to equate an Alphan with
that of a good doctor, a true son of Aesculapius, the Greek god of medicine.

Alpha Sigma Phi Fraternity is the oldest and most distinguished
fraternity created in the UERM College of Medicine. The fraternity
was there during the inception of the center and still continues to flourish
up to the present, producing brothers who are leaders in their respective
fields here and abroad. The tradition started by the founding
brothers continues to this day, with the present crop of members continuing
to uphold academic excellence, coupled with service to the community.
Throughout the years, the Alpha Sigma Phi has experienced smooth and rough
times, but continues to prevail.
